UMA FABULOSA VIAGEM À MALÁSIA,
À NOVA ZELÂNDIA, À AUSTRÁLIA,
À INDONÉSIA E À TAILÂNDIA
Aproveitando o último período de férias do ano de 2005, fizemos a mais longa de todas as viagens que já empreendemos por esse mundo fora. Era nossa intenção ir a um país que se situa nos antípodas da Península Ibérica, a Nova Zelândia, que é precisamente o país que no hemisfério sul se posiciona a uma latitude com valores semelhantes aos nossos.
Em termos não científicos, isto significa que os habitantes da Nova Zelândia andam com o corpo precisamente ao contrário dos habitantes da Península Ibérica. Curiosamente, quando essas massas de terra do hemisfério sul começaram a ser vagamente conhecidas na Europa, pensava-se que os seus habitantes tinham os pés ao contrário; e este é aliás o significado etimológico do termo antípodas.
E nós fomos realmente a esse país que se situa nos antípodas de Portugal e da Espanha. A viagem entre Lisboa e Auckland tem a duração de 27 horas, só em horas de voo, independentemente das horas de espera nos aeroportos das eventuais escalas. Por isso mesmo, resolvemos fazer um stop-over em Kuala Lumpur, para conhecer a capital da Malásia e as suas Petronas Twin Towers, os dois edifícios mais altos do mundo, e para descansar.
Mas quando enfim chegámos ao aeroporto de Auckland, aconteceu o inferno. Fomos obrigados a permanecer mais de duas horas com os agentes da polícia neozelandesa da emigração, que nos abriram e nos revistaram minuciosamente a mala e os sacos que levávamos, numa atitude repressiva que nos provocou tal ira e tal rancor que estivemos na iminência de ser preso.
Perguntavam-nos repetidamente se levávamos comida, como se pela nossa cara não se visse perfeitamente que éramos um turista civilizado e não um emigrante mafioso ou um contrabandista qualquer. Mas enfim, só o inferno da religião católica é que é eterno, este inferno neozelandês até acabou com pedidos de desculpa, e muito sinceramente nós lamentamos que a Nova Zelândia, um país tão acolhedor, com habitantes tão simpáticos, tenha uma polícia destas.
Apesar de ser a maior cidade da Nova Zelândia, Auckland é uma cidade relativamente pequena, pois tem pouco mais de um milhão de habitantes. É uma cidade muito bonita, com muitas colinas, mas não se compara à cidade que visitámos em seguida, já em solo australiano, a cidade de Sydney, que nós desde já consideramos uma das cidades mais belas do mundo.
Então a sua principal baía, a Sydney Cove, com o seu espantoso edifício da ópera, com a sua lindíssima ponte e com os fabulosos edifícios que enquadram a sua formosa enseada, é realmente uma obra-prima do homem e da natureza. Mas Sydney, que é uma cidade com quatro milhões de habitantes, tem outras encantadoras enseadas, é uma gigantesca Veneza plantada no hemisfério sul, um enorme aglomerado urbano, beijado, acariciado e penetrado pelo mar.
Em seguida voámos para Cairns, uma pequena cidade no nordeste da Austrália, a cerca de três mil quilómetros de Sydney, onde visitámos o maior recife de coral do mundo e um dos cinco mais belos lugares da terra, a Rainforest. São realmente sítios maravilhosos, especialmente a Rainforest, que nós percorremos de comboio, de teleférico e num longo passeio de uma hora a pé, no meio do chilrear das aves e da sinfonia de verdes de uma natureza exuberantemente tropical.
Depois de uma semana na Austrália, voámos para Bali, na Indonésia, onde durante cinco dias estivemos instalado num luxuoso hotel de praia, a trabalhar para o bronze e a nadar. E ainda estivemos na capital de Bali, Denpasar, onde visitámos os locais em que tiveram lugar alguns ataques terroristas.
A penúltima etapa da nossa longa viagem foi Jakarta, capital da Indonésia. Depois seguiu-se Phuket, na Tailândia, onde estivemos oito dias no ano passado e onde voltámos a ir este ano, para a praia do Hotel Le Meridien, a pedido de algumas garotas nossas amigas. Mas voltando a Jakarta, esta é uma cidade enorme, moderna e fascinante, com doze milhões de habitantes. Ficámos alojado no centro da cidade, num dos melhores hotéis de Jakarta, o Mandarin Oriental.
Jakarta é o nome actual de uma importante cidade que no século XVI se chamava Batavia. E os navegadores portugueses foram os primeiros europeus a desembarcar no seu porto. Tudo isto é conhecido, os guias turísticos falam de Portugal com muito carinho e nós sentimos em Batavia, que hoje é o nome do bairro histórico de Jakarta, uma forte presença de Portugal.
A Indonésia tem muitas ilhas com nomes portugueses, como é o caso das Flores, das Malucas, de Papua e ainda de Timor, cuja parte leste é hoje um país independente. Nós fomos muito acarinhado durante a semana em que lá estivemos e hoje podemos dizer que amamos tanto a Indonésia como amamos a nossa pátria.
Conhecemos muitas pessoas com nomes portugueses (Dimas, Marcelo, etc.) e as miúdas do restaurante do Hotel Mercure Sanur Resort, em Bali, que nos viam todos os dias nadar mais de meia hora na piscina em frente do restaurante, até nos baptizaram com o nome indonésio de Guti Garani, que significa the Strong Rock, o Forte Rocha.

A FABULOUS JOURNEY TO MALAYSIA,
NEW ZEALAND, AUSTRALIA,

In the last holiday period of 2005 we went on the longest journey of our lives through this world. We wanted to go to a country that is placed in the antipodes of Iberian Peninsula, New Zealand, which is precisely the country that has similar latitude to our in the south hemisphere.
In non-scientific terms, this means that New Zealand inhabitants walk upside down in comparison to the inhabitants of Iberian Peninsula. Curiously, when these lands where discovered, in Europe everyone thought that New Zealand inhabitants had the feet upside down, and this is the meaning of the word antipode.
And we really went there. The journey between Lisbon and Auckland takes 27 hours, only in flight time. That’s why we decided to stop-over in Kuala Lumpur, to get to know the capital of Malaysia and its Twin Towers, the two tallest buildings of the world, and to rest.
When finally we arrived to the Auckland airport, the problems started. We were forced to wait more than two hours with elements of the New Zealand police for emigration, which opened our bags and checked everything. We felt so bad with the situation, that we were almost arrested.
They kept asking us whether we were carrying food, as they could not see that we were tourist and not some sort of thief. But fortunately everything ended well, and they apologised to us. It’s hard to believe that a hospitable country as New Zealand, as also this kind of police.
Although the biggest city of New Zealand, Auckland it’s not a very big city, because it has more or less one million inhabitants. It is a very beautiful city, with lots of hills. But this is nothing in comparison to the city that we visited after. Already in Australia we reached Sydney, that we consider one of the beautifier cities of the world.
Its main bay Sydney Cove, with its splendorous opera building, its beautiful bridge and its magnificent buildings, is really a work of art of men and nature. Sydney it’s a city with 4 million inhabitants, it has charming inlets, it’s a giant Venice in the south hemisphere, an enormous city blessed by the sea.
Next we flied to Cairns, a little city in northeast of Australia three thousand kilometres away from Sydney, were we visited the biggest reef of choral of the world and one of the five more beautiful places of the world, the Rainforest. They are really wonderful places specially the Rainforest, which we travelled across by train, cable car and by foot, with the birds singing to us in the middle of an exuberant tropical nature.
After a week in Australia we flied to Bali, in Indonesia, where we spent five days in a five star hotel enjoying the sun and swimming. We were also in Bali’s capital, Denpasar, where we visited the places where some terrorist attacks took place.
One of the last stages of our journey was Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. After that, Phuket, in Thailand where we spent 8 days in the last year and where we went again this year to the beach of Le Meridian Hotel, because some of our friends asked. But speaking of Jakarta again, this is an enormous city, modern and fascinating with 12 million inhabitants. We stayed in one of the best hotels of Jakarta, the Mandarin Oriental.
